Description
Alice and Ilaria are the protagonists of the sixth triptych in the Beyond the Double series. These two women have taken very different paths in life: Alice is a lawyer, while Ilaria has pursued a career as an economist.
Since adolescence, they have felt the need to assert their individuality through a challenging journey that reached a turning point during their university years. It was during this period of youth that they were finally recognized as unique individuals and not just as “the twins.”
The portrait aims to express this duality: two faces in close proximity that, while in symbiosis, convey the need to assert themselves as distinct entities and identities. A play of forms and symmetries emphasizes the tension between their sense of mutual belonging and their need for independence and autonomy.
As with the other paintings in the series, this artwork invites reflection on how language—through labels and stereotypes—and social perceptions can limit individuality, inadvertently denying recognition of the self.
Whether it’s a sibling seeking to step out of another’s shadow, a woman striving to break free from gender stereotypes, or a professional wanting to be valued for their own merits, every individual can see themselves reflected in this piece. The cerulean and infinite background invites viewers to identify with Alice or Ilaria, who have fought and continue to fight to be seen from the outside as individuals and not merely as a pair.
